Finding the Bike Trail Heads in Willunga and Aldinga

Finding the Bike Trail Heads in Willunga and Aldinga

The newly created bike trails from Willunga to Aldinga, and from Aldinga to Seaford (joining up with the Coast to Vines Trail), make it possible to ride a loop around the McLaren Vale region almost entirely on bike trails. The bike trails are not quite contiguous, however, so here are some tips to ensure you don’t miss the connections.

Bike Trails connecting Aldinga, Willunga and McLaren Vale

The Bike Trails (marked in black) allow cyclists to avoid the Main Roads (marked in brown). It is possible to ride from Port Willunga to Aldinga Boat Ramp on a bike trail shared with pedestrians, and from Aldinga Bike Ramp, it is possible to ride further south along the beach itself.

Aldinga to Seaford Bike Track

Once you join the Aldinga to Seaford Bike Track, you will ride parallel to (but completely separate from) South Road. The track terminates at a T junction with the Coast to Vines Trail, at which point you can turn right to head into McLaren Vale, or left to head north to Seaford and beyond.

Navigating to Pt Willunga Beach

From the little Aldinga roundabout, ride straight ahead (keeping the Aldinga Hotel on your right). After ~500m, Port Rd branches off at an angle on your right (just before the school's pedestrian lights). Turning right onto Port Rd here you will ride along a tree lined road (see picture) that becomes the Esplanade after ~ 1km.

The Pt Willunga Esplanade

The Esplanade shared trail (walkers and bikes) runs from The Star of Greece Restaurant to the Aldinga Beach boat ramp (where Pearl Restaurant is located beside the boat ramp). Beyond the Aldinga boat ramp, the road is narrow and is not recommended for bikes, however you can ride along the beach itself.

There is no coastal bike track heading north from The Star of Greece (it is sandhills). If you want to head north, we recommend you ride back down Port Rd to get onto the Aldinga - Seaford bike track (see above).
