Discover the Onkaparinga River Loop by eBike: Coastal Cliffs, River Views & Trailside Treasures

Looking for a scenic ride that blends coastal beauty, river magic and South Australian wine country charm?

The Onkaparinga River Loop is a must-ride experience — and there’s no better way to do it than on an electric bike from SA eBikes, your local eBike hire experts based at the McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Coast Visitor Centre.

This ride combines sealed shared paths, seaside esplanades, gentle hills and iconic views. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a local rediscovering your backyard, this loop reveals a fresh side of the Onkaparinga region.

Your Journey Begins: McLaren Vale to the Coast

The adventure kicks off at the McLaren Vale & Fleurieu Coast Visitor Centre (aka the VIC), where SA eBikes offers ready-to-roll electric bikes and friendly, in-person briefings to set you up for success. From here, join the Coast to Vines Rail Trail, a tree-lined path that meanders past vineyards, gum trees and scenic farmland. The ride is smooth and easy — a relaxing way to start your journey.

Continuing under the iconic fish bridge and the junction with the South Road Trail, bear right, then take a left at the gates to cruise down Dalkeith Road, which becomes Nashwauk Road as you descend towards the sea.

Coastal Cruising & Clifftop Views

You are now at the Mid-Coast surf beach of Moana and the beginning of the local Esplanade, a clifftop shared path hugging the coast. The turquoise water and sea breezes are instantly refreshing, and you’ll soon be rewarded with a breathtaking lookout over the mouth of the Onkaparinga River — a perfect photo stop.

Take the wooden path downhill into Port Noarlunga, a beachside gem known for its historic jetty and vibrant reef. Explore the Witton Bluff trail beside the ancient sandstone cliffs, offering spectacular coastal vistas and a unique geological backdrop.

Riverside Riding & Return to the Vines

Leaving the coast, turn left onto Gawler Street, then right onto River Road, following the quiet curves of the Onkaparinga River upstream. You can follow the road or explore this most tranquil part of the loop — a chance to slow down and soak up the natural surrounds.

Rejoin the Coast to Vines trail just after Serafino Drive.

The return route follows what was once the Willunga railway line, making for a smooth, uninterrupted ride back toward McLaren Vale. Pass once more under the fish bridge and glide effortlessly into the Visitor Centre — where shady gardens, regional produce, and well-earned refreshments await.
